Dear Hiller Families,
January was a wonderful month of academic learning for our Hiller student leaders. It’s hard to believe that we are now at the beginning of the 2nd Semester of our school year! During the month of January our students took the NWEA online computer assessment and our teachers assessed each students’ reading level using the Fountas and Pinnell Assessment. Our students and teachers will use the results of these assessments to monitor the growth that they have made so far this school year, as well as set new goals for each student leader for the third card marking. We have an exciting and busy month of February ahead of us! On February 14th we will have our Board Meeting presentation, and our Leadership Day is on February 16th where we will be highlighting the incredible things that we have been doing as a third year Leader In Me school. Don’t forget that we will have NO SCHOOL on Monday, February 20th and Tuesday, February 21st for our Mid-Winter Break!
Please read below for some important information regarding our school:
The Leader In Me
During the month of February we will be focusing on Habit 4 which is to “Think Win-Win”. We will be talking with the students about thinking about and implementing the following statements to support living by this habit:
- I balance courage for getting what I want with consideration for what others want.
- When conflicts arise, I look for a win-win solution.
Please encourage your child to use these habits at home and use the statements above to remind them about applying their 7 Habits outside of school as well as inside of school.
I wanted to remind you that we will be hosting the Board of Education at our school on Tuesday, February 14th at 7 PM. We will have several students present about what we have been learning about and implementing in our third year as a Leader In Me school. We hope that you can join us to support our students!
Our school will be having a Leadership Day for business leaders, educators and community organizations on Thursday, February 16th during the morning. We will be repeating our Board Meeting presentation for local educators, business leaders, and community organizations so that they can visit us and learn about our “Leader In Me” school. We are looking forward to showcasing our school with our local community!
We will have our second set of conferences for this year on the evenings of March 1st and 2nd . Since we are in our third year of being a Leader In Me School we will have student-led conferences. More information will be coming home soon about these conferences.
Winter Reminders/School Hours
Please remember to dress your child appropriately for the winter weather. They should come to school with boots, hats, gloves, snow pants, and winter jackets. The students do go outside for recess unless the temperature is below 20 degrees outside or 10 degrees or less with the wind chill factor. Also, please remember that even in the winter our doors open at 8:15 AM for students to enter our school. We love our students and care about their safety, so please do not drop your child off at our front entrance prior to this time. We do have some special events before school such as 5th grade band that occur prior to this time. The students who are involved in these special groups will be allowed to come in when their event or job begins. Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe.
We always welcome volunteers in our school. Please contact your child’s teacher to find out ways that you can volunteer at our school. Don’t forget if you are planning to volunteer in any way (i.e. attending field trips, helping with classroom parties, etc.) please fill out a background check prior to volunteering. Thank you!
Parking Lot/Traffic Safety Reminders
Please remember to drive cautiously through our school parking lot! Please do not park in the circle drop off area near our Kindergarten doors. There are many parking spaces available in the back. Please do not leave your car parked in front of the Kindergarten doors or along the side fence area. This creates an unsafe situation for our children. Also, please make sure not to double park on Delton. Double parking and dropping off our students in the street and between cars is also an unsafe situation. Additionally, please respect our amazing neighbors and do not block their driveways during our dismissal time. Remember that the buses drop off our students in the front of the school. Please avoid parking in the circle drive in front of Hiller so that the buses can safely pick up our students. We all need to work together to help keep our students safe during our drop-off and pick-up times. Thank you!
We are looking forward to an incredible month of February! Please review the attached calendar for the month of February highlighting important school events. Don’t forget to follow our school on Twitter by following @hillerwildcats. Please feel free to call me with any questions or concerns that you may have about your child at (248) 589-0406.
