Hiller Elementary - A Leader in Me School

Greetings, and welcome to the Hiller Elementary website!

Brad SassackMy name is Brad Sassack, and I am proud to be the principal of Hiller Elementary.  I am a firm believer in working with our staff to create a positive, ambitious school culture that is student-centered.  Additionally, I hold a high regard for forming strong relationships with students and their families.  These relationships lay the foundation for the deep learning that takes place within our classrooms.  At Hiller, the mantra of, “every child…every day” is truly valued.

Hiller Elementary prides itself on being a welcoming, nurturing school.  The staff aims to partner with our families and community to ensure students’ success through meaningful communication, engaging activities, and a friendly environment. We also value the diversity our school has to offer and believe in the benefit of learning about the many cultures represented by our students.

Read by Grade 3 Lamphere logoIn 2016, the Michigan Legislature passed a law that requires schools to identify learners who are struggling with reading and writing and to provide additional help. The law states that third graders may repeat third grade if they are more than one grade level behind beginning with the 2019-2020 school year.

We've posted some resources and Facts for Families on our Curriculum Department website to help families understand the Read by Grade Three Law so they can support their child.  You will find a variety of videos and fact sheets from the Michigan Department of Education and reading tip sheets for parents of toddlers through third grade students.  Please be sure to check back often as we'll be updating this site with more info and activities to strengthen our youngest learners reading, writing and comprehension skills.

If you have any questions regarding the Third Grade Reading Law, please contact Jane Jurvis, Lamphere's Director of Curriculum and Instruction.  Email: jurvisj@lamphereschools.org or phone (248) 589-1990
