October 2017

September 29, 2017

Dear Hiller Families,

It’s hard to believe the month of October is here! The month of September was absolutely amazing at Hiller! Our student leaders accomplished many things in their first month of school, and I look forward to what they will continue to accomplish this year! Below I have outlined some important information regarding the month of October that I hope you will find helpful. I have also included an October calendar for you to review regarding important dates to remember.

The Leader In Me

The students were given an overview of the 7 Habits (Be Proactive, Begin With The End In Mind, Put First Things First, Think Win-Win, Seek First to Understand, Then To Be Understood, Synergize, and Sharpen The Saw) during the first month of school. During the month of October we will be focusing on teaching our students a deep level of understanding of what it means to “Be Proactive”. Please encourage your child to think about ways that they can make responsible choices at home, focus on solutions, think before acting, and take initiative to make things happen. We will be talking with the students about thinking about and implementing the following statements to support living by this habit:

I am in charge of my own life.

I am responsible for whether I am happy or sad.

I can choose how I react to other people or situations.

Please encourage your child to use Habit 1, Be Proactive, at home and use the statements above to remind them about applying their 7 Habits outside of school as well as inside of school.

DIA Experience

I am excited to share that on October 11th and 12th the Detroit Institute of Arts will be bringing a trailer to Hiller that will be parked in our back parking lot for our students to learn about and experience the beauty of art. Our students will have a scheduled time on one of these two days to visit the exhibit inside of the trailer. This is an exciting opportunity for our student leaders! Please note that on these two days there will be limited parking in our back parking lot by the kindergarten classrooms for the afternoon pick up time. We appreciate your patience if you are a kindergarten parent and are picking up your child at the end of the day on the 11th and 12th.

On Tuesday, October 31st, Hiller students will be celebrating Halloween in their classrooms. This will be a half day of school with dismissal at 11:40 AM. Our student leaders should wear their costumes to school in the morning on this day. The students in grades K-5 will parade through the school and outside (weather permitting) at approximately 10:00 AM. Parties will be held at our school according to your child’s classroom party schedule. Please check with your child’s teacher about when he/she will be having the Halloween party as we get closer to this date.

Academic Assessments

During the month of September our reading teachers spent time assessing our  kindergarten through third grade students in the area of reading using the AIMS Web Plus assessment. This assessment helps us to gather information about how we can support and challenge your child in reading during classroom instruction. Please encourage your child to read at home every night. This will help them to improve their reading skills throughout the school year.

In addition to the K-3 AIMS Web Plus testing, our K-5 students took the NWEA MAP test in the areas of reading and math during the month of September.  This was an online assessment that helped us to gather more information about your child’s reading and math abilities, so that we can plan for how to continue to help your child grow in these academic areas. Additionally, this assessment helped our students prepare for any future online assessments that they may be taking in school.

School Hours/Before School Wait Procedures

It is important that your child arrives to school on time so that they don’t miss out on any important educational information. The first bell will ring at 8:30 a.m., and school will begin at 8:35 a.m. On half days of school, dismissal time for all students will be at 11:40 a.m.

Your child’s safety is important to us and in order to ensure that they are safe while they wait for school to begin, we will continue having them line up inside near their classroom door for school to begin. Please remember that we have designated doors where your child will enter school in the morning. The doors will open at 8:15 a.m. Kindergarten students and students who ride the bus should enter through the front doors of our school that lead to the front office, grades 3-5 students should enter through the entrance off of LaSalle (the double doors located by our outdoor school sign), and grades 1-2 students should enter through the entrance off of Delton.

Parking Lot/Traffic Safety

Please make sure not to double park on Delton. Double parking and dropping off our students in the street and between cars is also an unsafe situation. Additionally, please respect our amazing neighbors and do not block their driveways during our dismissal time. Remember that the buses drop off our students in the front of the school. Please avoid parking in the circle drive in front of Hiller so that the buses can safely pick up our students. We all need to work together to help keep our students safe during our drop-off and pick-up times. Thank you!

We are looking forward to an incredible month of October! If you should have any questions regarding the information above or concerning your child’s education, please don’t hesitate to contact me or your child’s classroom teacher at (248) 589-0406. Educationally yours,

Jen Cumiskey, Principal
