September 2017

September 6, 2017

Dear Hiller Families,

Welcome to the 2017/2018 school year! We had an amazing first day of school yesterday! It was incredible to see all of our student leaders, and I look forward to the amazing things that are to come this year. Below I have outlined some important information about the beginning of our school year that I hope you will find helpful. I have also included a September calendar for you to review regarding important dates to remember.

The Leader In Me

I am thrilled to share that last year we became the 15th Lighthouse School in the state of Michigan! It was an exciting achievement for our school and an honor to be recognized by Franklin Covey and the State of Michigan for this achievement. This year we will be continuing our “Leader in Me” journey based on Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We will be using the 7 Habits of Happy Kids book as well as incorporating the 7 Habits into our everyday academic lessons to teach our students how to implement the 7 Habits into their own lives. We will be focusing on helping every child to see their own potential and finding ways that they can be a leader. We will be continuing to implement the concepts of Leadership Notebooks, Student-Led Conferences, and School-Wide Student Leadership Roles this year. The Leader in Me is being implemented not only in many schools across the United States, but in other countries around the world as well. We will be continuing to participate in professional learning throughout the year to learn how we can incorporate the 7 Habits into our daily lives as a school, to reach the leadership potential that we all have inside of us. We look forward to sharing information about the fourth year of our “Leader in Me” journey as the year progresses.  If you would like to read more information about The Leader in Me please visit

Peanut Free School

This is a friendly reminder that Hiller is a peanut free school. If you are sending in snacks or a lunch with your child it is important that there not be any peanuts as a part of the ingredients. We want to ensure that all of our students are safe, so thank you for helping us with this!

Open House/Curriculum Night/Title I Annual Meeting/Ice Cream Social

Our Open House/Curriculum Night/Title I Annual Meeting/Ice Cream Social will be held at Hiller on Thursday, September 7th from 6-8 PM. This will be a time for you to meet your child’s teacher, see their classroom, and learn important information about your child’s curriculum and classroom expectations for the year. This evening is for both you and your child to attend, so feel free to bring them to this special event. Our first session for our families will be from 6:05-6:25 PM. Our second session will be from 6:30-6:50 PM. We will also have an Ice Cream Social that will be sponsored by our HERO Parent Organization in our Multi-Purpose Room, and on our playground starting at 6:30 PM. We hope to see you at this important night on September 7th!

Millage Renewal, HERO and Parent Spotlight Meeting

Please join us at Hiller Elementary this Friday at 2 PM for an informational meeting from our Superintendent, Dale Steen, and our Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance, Patrick Dillon, about our upcoming millage renewal. Our HERO and Parent Spotlight Organization will be having a meeting at 2:30 PM immediately following the millage renewal informational meeting. We would love for you to join our HERO and Parent Spotlight Organization! We hope to see you at Hiller for these meetings on Friday!

School Hours

It is important that your child arrives to school on time so that they don’t miss out on any important educational information. The first bell will ring at 8:30 a.m., and school will begin at 8:35 a.m. On half days of school, dismissal time for all students will be at 11:40 a.m. Our students will be dismissed at the end of the day at 3:28 p.m.

Staffing Changes

I am excited to welcome some new staff members to Hiller this year. We welcome Ms. Jones as our new music teacher, Mrs. Felts as our new fourth grade teacher, and Mrs. Casinelli as our new social worker. We are excited to have these fabulous new staff members join our school community! We also welcome back Mr. Ziaja to our school who will be teaching PE to our 5th grade students. Mr. Kirby will still be here on Tuesdays teaching PE to our K-4 students. We are thrilled to have both of these amazing PE teachers working together at Hiller this year.

Free Breakfast and Lunch at Hiller

I am thrilled to share with you that we will continue to provide ALL students in the classroom with a free breakfast and lunch this year! You will still need to fill out the Household Survey that was sent home today because we are required to have this on file to qualify for free lunch and breakfast for ALL students. Thank you for your cooperation in filling out this important paperwork.

We will be continuing our breakfast program in the same way that we served breakfast to our students in the past. This means that breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. when your child enters the classroom and will be provided to ALL students. Please do not drop your child off earlier than 8:15 a.m. to school for their safety. If you are in need of childcare prior to this time please contact our Learning Ladder Office to sign your child up for Latchkey at (248) 589-3753. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter!

Before School Wait Procedures

Our students will be waiting INDOORS every day before school begins this year. Your child’s safety is important to us and in order to ensure that they are safe while they wait for school to begin, we will be having them line up inside near their classroom door for school to begin. We have designated doors where your child will enter school in the morning. The doors will open at 8:15 a.m. Kindergarten students and students who ride the bus will enter through the front doors of our school that lead to the front office, grades 3-5 students will enter through the entrance off of LaSalle (the double doors located by our outdoor school sign), and grades 1-2 students will enter through the entrance off of Delton.
