February 2018

February 2, 2018

Dear Hiller Families,

January was a wonderful month of academic learning for our Hiller student leaders. It’s hard to believe that we are now at the beginning of the 2nd Semester of our school year! As our students leaders begin the second half of the school year we will be reflecting on and reviewing each leader’s academic progress. We will continue to help our students set goals for themselves to help them focus on Beginning with the End in Mind (Habit 2). We are excited about all of the academic progress our students have made so far this school year! We raised $322.51 for our Madison Heights Animal Shelter Coin Drive! Thank you for your generosity and kindness in supporting our community fundraiser.  We have an exciting month of February ahead of us! On Monday we will be having a Diversity Assembly at our school. We are excited about this opportunity for our students. Our students will also be getting together in their K-5 PAWS Groups to learn more about the 7 Habits and Leadership Paradigms on Wednesday, February 7th. Additionally, we will be having a Movie Night sponsored by our HERO Parent Group on Friday, February 9th at 6 PM. We will be having our Valentine’s Day Celebrations on February 14th. Please check in with your child’s classroom teacher regarding when they are planning to do their classroom celebration. Don’t forget that we will have NO SCHOOL on Monday, February 19th and Tuesday, February 20th for our Mid-Winter Break!

Please read below for some important information regarding our school:

The Leader In Me

During the month of February we will be focusing on Habit 4 which is to “Think Win-Win”. We will be talking with the students about thinking about and implementing the following statements to support living by this habit:

  • I balance courage for getting what I want with consideration for what others want.
  • When conflicts arise, I look for a win-win solution.

Please encourage your child to use these habits at home and use the statements above to remind them about applying their 7 Habits outside of school as well as inside of school.

I am happy to share that our Student Lighthouse Team will be visiting Hamilton-Parsons Elementary School on Monday, February 5th to collaborate together on special projects that focus on the 7 Habits and Leadership Paradigms. We are excited to give our Student Lighthouse Team the opportunity to visit another school and learn from another Student Lighthouse Team.

4th Grade Robotics Club

I am excited to share that our first 4th Grade Robotics Club will be starting soon! Mrs. Felts will be organizing and leading the 4th Grade Robotics Club this year. Next year we plan to have our students who are currently a part of this club enter into a Robotics competition in the late fall. We are excited to be involved in this great opportunity for our school. We will keep you posted in the fall about when the competition is so that you can come and support our students at this event!

Spring Conferences:

We will have our second set of conferences for this year on the evenings of February 28th and March 1st. Since we are in our fourth year of being a Leader In Me School we will have student-led conferences. More information will be coming home soon about these conferences.

Winter Reminders/School Hours

Please remember to dress your child appropriately for the winter weather. They should come to school with boots, hats, gloves, snow pants, and winter jackets. The students do go outside for recess unless the temperature is below 20 degrees outside or 10 degrees or less with the wind chill factor. Also, please remember that even in the winter our doors open at 8:15 AM for students to enter our school. We love our students and care about their safety, so please do not drop your child off at our front entrance prior to this time. We do have some special events before school such as 5th grade band that occur prior to this time. The students who are involved in these special groups will be allowed to come in when their event or job begins. Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe.

Parking Lot/Traffic Safety Reminders

Please remember to drive cautiously through our school parking lot! Please do not park in the circle drop off area near our Kindergarten doors. There are many parking spaces available in the back. Please do not leave your car parked in front of the Kindergarten doors or along the side fence area. This creates an unsafe situation for our children. Also, please make sure not to double park on Delton. Double parking and dropping off our students in the street and between cars is also an unsafe situation. Additionally, please respect our amazing neighbors and do not block their driveways during our dismissal time. Remember that the buses drop off our students in the front of the school. Please avoid parking in the circle drive in front of Hiller so that the buses can safely pick up our students. We all need to work together to help keep our students safe during our drop-off and pick-up times. Thank you!

We are looking forward to an incredible month of February!  Please review the attached calendar for the month of February highlighting important school events. Don’t forget to follow our school on Twitter by following @hillerwildcats. Please feel free to call me with any questions or concerns that you may have about your child at (248) 589-0406.

Educationally yours,

Jen Cumiskey, Principal
