January 2018

January 9, 2018

Dear Hiller Families,

Welcome back and Happy New Year! December was such a positive month filled with amazing events! Our Holiday Concert was a wonderful success where our student leaders did an amazing job performing for our community. We ended up collecting a total of 1, 678 cans for our canned food drive! Thank you for your generosity during the holiday season in helping others in need. As we begin the New Year our student leaders will continue to work hard on focusing on their academic goals by using Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind.  We have many exciting events coming up in the near future including a Leader in Me Family Event on January 17th that will be hosted by our Title I Reading Team. We hope that you will join us for this event at Hiller at 1:50 PM. Also, we have a Barnes and Noble Fundraiser Event on Friday, January 26th from 4:30-9 PM at the Barnes and Noble location across from the Oakland Mall. Come and stop by this amazing event to support our school! Don’t forget that we will have NO SCHOOL on Monday, January 15th and a ½ day of school on Friday, January 26th!

Please read below for some important information regarding our school:

The Leader In Me

We are continuing to focus on Habit 3 which is to “Put First Things First” during the month of January. We will also continue to talk with our students about thinking about and implementing the following statements to support living by this habit:

I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I know I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am disciplined and organized.

Please encourage your child to use these habits at home and use the statements above to remind them about applying their 7 Habits outside of school as well as inside of school.

End of the 1st Semester/Report Cards

The end of our first semester will be on Friday, January 26th. Our student leaders had World Culture Class with Mrs. Witkowski as one of their specials classes during the first semester. Starting the week of January 29th your child will begin having Art Class with Mrs. McClellan as one of their specials classes.  The students have enjoyed having World Culture Class and we are looking forward to having Art Class for the second semester.

The 2nd card marking report cards will be made available to you on February 2nd after 9 AM. Please login online to view your child’s report card. Thank you for supporting your child’s academic progress!

Winter Reminders/School Hours

Please remember to continue to dress your child appropriately for the winter weather. They should come to school with boots, hats, gloves, snow pants, and winter jackets. The students do go outside for recess unless the temperature is below 20 degrees outside or 10 degrees or less with the wind chill factor. Also, please remember that even in the winter our doors open at 8:15 AM for students to enter our school. We love our students and care about their safety, so please do not drop your child off at our front entrance prior to this time. We do have some special events before school such as 5th grade band that occur prior to this time. The students who are involved in these special groups will be allowed to come in when their event or job begins. Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe.

Parking Lot/Traffic Safety Reminders

Please remember to drive cautiously through our school parking lot. Please do not leave your car parked in front of the Kindergarten doors or along the side fence area. This creates an unsafe situation for our children. Also, please make sure not to double park on Delton. Double parking and dropping off our students in the street and between cars is also an unsafe situation. Additionally, please respect our amazing neighbors and do not block their driveways during our dismissal time. Remember that the buses drop off our students in the front of the school. Please avoid parking in the circle drive in front of Hiller so that the buses can safely pick up our students. We all need to work together to help keep our students safe during our drop-off and pick-up times. Thank you!

We are looking forward to an incredible month of January ahead! Please review the attached calendar for the month of January highlighting important school events. Don’t forget to follow our school on Twitter by following @hillerwildcats. Please feel free to call me with any questions or concerns that you may have about your child at (248) 589-0406.

Educationally yours,

Jen Cumiskey, Principal
