March 2018

March 1, 2018

Dear Hiller Families,

We are thrilled that it is “March is Reading Month”! There are many wonderful activities planned during this special month at our school to celebrate the beauty of reading. I encourage you to continue to read with your child at home on a daily basis to help strengthen their reading skills! Don’t forget that we will have a half day of school on Thursday, March 29th. We will be dismissed at 11:40 AM that day. This will mark the end of the third card marking! Additionally, there will be NO SCHOOL from Friday, March 30th through Friday, April 6th for our Spring Break this year. School will resume on Monday, April 9th.

Please read below for some important information regarding our school:

Conferences

If you didn’t join us last night, please join us tonight from 6:45-7:45 PM to hear about your child’s Leadership Notebook! Each student will lead a “student-led” conference with you and share about their successes so far this year, and goals that they have set for the remainder of the year to work on as a student leader. We look forward to seeing you for this incredible opportunity to celebrate what your child has accomplished so far this year.

Kindergarten Round-Up

Our Kindergarten Round-Up has been scheduled for March 14th at 6:30 PM for the parents of our students who will be entering Kindergarten for the 2018-19 school year.

Hiller International Family Night Fundraiser

Please join us on the evening of March 22nd at 6 PM to enjoy food and friendship together as a school family! This is the first Hiller International Family Night, and we are really excited to have our whole school community come together to enjoy dinner and socializing together. Please look for the RSVP form to come home with your child to let us know that you will be attending.

The Leader In Me

During the month of March we will focus on Habit 5 which is “Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood”. We will be talking with the students about thinking about and implementing the following statements to support living by this habit:

  • I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings.
  • I try to see things from their viewpoint (paradigm).
  • I listen to others without interrupting.
  • I listen with my ears, my eyes, and my heart.
  • I am confident in voicing my ideas.

Please encourage your child to use these habits at home and use the statements above to remind them about applying their 7 Habits outside of school as well as inside of school.

School Hours

Please remember that our doors open at 8:15 AM for students to enter our school. We love our students and care about their safety, so please do not drop your child off at our front entrance prior to this time. We do have some special events before school such as 5th grade band that occur prior to this time. The students who are involved in these special groups will be allowed to come in when their event or job begins. Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe.

Parking Lot/Traffic Safety Reminders

Please remember to drive cautiously through our school parking lot! Please do not park in the circle drop off area near our Kindergarten doors. There are many parking spaces available in the back. Please do not leave your car parked in front of the Kindergarten doors or along the side fence area. This creates an unsafe situation for our children. Also, please make sure not to double park on Delton. Double parking and dropping off our students in the street and between cars is also an unsafe situation. Additionally, please respect our amazing neighbors and do not block their driveways during our dismissal time. Remember that the buses drop off our students in the front of the school. Please avoid parking in the circle drive in front of Hiller so that the buses can safely pick up our students. We all need to work together to help keep our students safe during our drop-off and pick-up times. Thank you!

We are looking forward to an incredible month of March!  Please review the attached calendar for the month of March highlighting important school events. Don’t forget to follow our school on Twitter by following @hillerwildcats. Please feel free to call me with any questions or concerns that you may have about your child at (248) 589-0406.

Educationally yours,

Jen Cumiskey, Principal
