May-June 2018

May 7, 2018

Dear Hiller Families,

We had a wonderful month of April at our school! Our Elementary Science Fair was amazing! It was wonderful to see so many outstanding projects on display from our students. Last Friday the Page Choir came to perform for our school. They did a terrific job performing, and it was incredible to see so many of our former Hiller students shine during the concert. Our students have been working hard in our last card marking of the school year to achieve their academic goals. Thank you for your continued positive support for our school, and for taking the time to support your child’s academic growth at home on a daily basis. This will be my last newsletter of the school year, and I wanted to take a moment to express how much I have enjoyed being the principal at Hiller for the last nine years. I am going to truly miss working with all of you next year, but am looking forward to working with your student leaders as they get older and move on to middle school. I know that we are going to have an amazing end to our school year! We have several wonderful things to look forward to during the months of May and June. Please read below for some important information regarding our school:

The Leader In Me

During the month of May we will be focusing on Habit 7 which is “Sharpening the Saw”. We will be talking with the students about thinking about and implementing the following statements to support living by this habit:

  • I eat right, exercise, and get enough sleep (body).
  • I learn in lots of ways and lots of places, not just in school (brain).
  • I spend time with my family and friends (heart).
  • I take time to find meaningful ways to help people (soul).
  • I balance all four parts of myself.

During the month of June we will be reviewing all 7 Habits that we have learned this school year!

Please encourage your child to use the 7 Habits at home and use the statements above to remind them about applying the 7 Habits outside of school as well as inside of school.

Field Day

We are planning to have Field Day on Tuesday, May 29th. Information will be sent out soon from our HERO Parent Group about volunteering for this event. I encourage you to come and volunteer to help with a station so that our students can have a fun and exciting Field Day! J

5th Grade Celebration

Fifth grade families, please mark your calendars for the last day of school, June 15th, at 9 AM for our 5th Grade Celebration. Our kindergarten through fourth grade students will be clapping for our 5th graders in the hallway on their way to the celebration. We hope to see you there to honor your child’s hard work before they move on to middle school.

Kindergarten Celebration

Kindergarten families, please mark your calendars for June 14th at 2:30 PM for the end of the year Kindergarten Celebration. We hope to see you at the celebration to honor your child’s first year of school at Hiller.

School Hour Reminders

Please remember that our doors open at 8:15 AM for students to enter our school. We love our students and care about their safety, so please do not drop your child off at our front entrance prior to this time. We do have some special events before school such as 5th grade band that occur prior to this time. The students who are involved in these special groups will be allowed to come in when their event or job begins. Additionally, please remember that school dismisses at 3:28 PM. It is important that you are here on time to pick up your child from school. Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe.

Volunteers

We always welcome volunteers in our school. Don’t forget if you are planning to volunteer in any way (i.e. attending field trips, helping with classroom parties, etc.) please fill out a background check prior to volunteering. Thank you!

Parking Lot/Traffic Safety Reminders

Please remember to drive cautiously through our school parking lot! Please do not park in the circle drop off area near our Kindergarten doors. There are many parking spaces available in the back. Please do not leave your car parked in front of the Kindergarten doors or along the side fence area. This creates an unsafe situation for our children. Also, please make sure not to double park on Delton. Double parking and dropping off our students in the street and between cars is also an unsafe situation. Additionally, please respect our amazing neighbors and do not block their driveways during our dismissal time. Remember that the buses drop off our students in the front of the school. Please avoid parking in the circle drive in front of Hiller so that the buses can safely pick up our students. We all need to work together to help keep our students safe during our drop-off and pick-up times. Thank you!

We are looking forward to an incredible end to our school year!  Please review the attached calendar for the months of May and June highlighting important school events. Don’t forget to follow our school on Twitter by following @hillerwildcats. Please feel free to call me with any questions or concerns that you may have about your child at (248) 589-0406.

Educationally yours,

Jen Cumiskey, Principal
